Ammonoids are a group of extinct marine mollusc commonly referred to as ammonites. Their name is derived by the spiral shape of their fossilized shells, which somewhat resemble tightly coiled rams’ horns.
-
The internal structure consisted of horizontal plates called tabulate and vertical walls called septa.
-
The earliest ammonites appeared during the Devonian period.
-
They are an excellent index fossil inasmuch as linking the rock layer in which a particular species or genus is found to specific geologic time periods is often possible.
-
The stone is 2 1/4 inch x 1 1/2 inch. The crown depth is 1/4 inch.
-
The ammonite was trimmed and sanded to 1/16 inch, then backed with 3/16 basalt for stability and beauty.
-
Cabochon is hand-cut and polished. Back of stone is not polished.
