  • Dinosaurs emerged between 240 million and 230 million years ago.  They existed until about 66 million years ago when a giant asteroid slammed into the earth in the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico.
  • Dinosaurs first appeared in the Triassic period (251.9 ma to 201.3 ma); they roamed the supercontinent of Pangaea. But by the time the asteroid hit at the end of the Cretaceous period (145 ma to 65 ma) the continents were in approximately the same place they are today.
  • The most common process for fossilization:  The dinosaur had to be buried in sediment such as sand, silt or mud, shortly after it died to prevent the oxygen from continuing the decomposition process.  The soft parts of the body continued to decompose and the hard parts such as bone were left.  The minerals in the water from nearby rocks surrounded these hard parts and replaced them slowly.  When the minerals completely replaced the organic tissue, what was left was a solid rock copy.  A fossil.
  • This particular stone came from the Jurassic geologic period ranging from 201.3 million to 145 million years ago.  The Jurassic period was the middle of three periods, the first being the Triassic Period, the Jurassic period and the Cretaceous period, which comprises the Mesozoic Era. The Morrison Formation of the United States and the Solnhofen Limestone of Germany, both famous for their exceptionally well-preserved fossils, are geologic features that were formed during Jurassic times.
  • All bone sold on this site was purchased from public sales or auctions.  Some bone was used from the collection of Robert and Louise Green estate, my parents.  Robert Green was an avid collector during his early years and stopped collecting after it became illegal to do so.  Please do not collect from public lands inasmuch as the same is illegal in nature.  Only collect from private land with the permission of the landowner.  Your collecting endeavors will be much more enjoyable if you follow these suggestions and your familiarity with law enforcement will be happily inconsequential.
  • The bone is 1 5/8 inch x 7/8 inch.  The crown depth is 1/4 inch.
  • Cabochon is hand-cut and polished.  Back of stone is not polished.
