Fossilized wood is the remains of terrestrial vegetation.
-
Petrification is the result of a tree or plants having been replaced by stone via a mineralization process. The organic materials making up cell walls have been replaced by minerals.
-
The petrification process occurs underground when wood becomes buried in water, mud, or volcanic ash. The burial reduces the availability of oxygen, which inhibits aerobic decomposition by bacteria and fungi. Mineral-laden water flowing through the sediments may lead to permineralization, which occurs when minerals precipitate out of the solution filling the interiors of cells.
-
The stone is freeform and is 1 7/8 inch x 5/8 inch. The crown depth is 3/8 inch.
-
Cabochon is hand-cut and polished. Back of stone is not polished.
